Morocco Anticipates Severe Weather and Agricultural Opportunities

Morocco’s meteorological agency warns of strong rainfall and snowfall from Monday to Wednesday, impacting multiple provinces. Similar weather conditions are expected to benefit agriculture, prompting the Agriculture Ministry to support farmers with seed supplies and lower prices.
The General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco has issued an orange alert as strong rainfall is anticipated from Monday through Wednesday across several provinces. Rainfall of 35 to 50 millimeters is expected in Taourirt, Figuig, Guercif, Boulemane, Errachidia, Tinghir, and Midelt, from midnight Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Additionally, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Sefrou, Taza, Beni Mellal, Azilal, M’diq-Fnideq, and Fahs-Anjra will experience 25 to 30 millimeters of rain during Monday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Snowfall will occur in Boulemane, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Tinghir, and Midelt from midnight Monday to Tuesday morning. Cold temperatures are also forecasted, with lows between -3 and 3 degrees Celsius in Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Midelt, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Boulemane, and Ifrane.
This recent rainfall is beneficial for Morocco’s agricultural sector, which has faced prolonged droughts and water shortages. Last weekend, rainfall was observed across various locations, including Rabat. Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari has launched the new agricultural season, focusing on assisting farmers amidst challenges related to water scarcity and increasing costs.
The Agriculture Ministry intends to cover approximately 5 million hectares with 1.26 million quintals of certified seeds, mainly autumn cereals, which will be priced 3-5% lower than previous years to encourage use among farmers.
Morocco is preparing for severe weather conditions, including significant rainfall and snowfall, which could positively impact agriculture following years of drought. Alerts are in place for several provinces as low temperatures are also forecasted. The Ministry of Agriculture is taking proactive measures to support farmers through the upcoming challenges of the new agricultural season, enhancing seed availability and affordability.
