Mozambique police have arrested seven suspects, including two officers, in connection to the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman in Chokwe. The victim was abducted on March 3 and later found deceased. Authorities seized firearms and vehicles linked to the crime. All suspects deny involvement, claiming innocence.

The Mozambican police have arrested seven individuals linked to the kidnapping and murder of a businessman from India in Chokwe. Among those detained are two police officers stationed in Guija district, according to spokesperson Zaqueu Mucambe from the National Criminal Investigation Service. The victim was kidnapped on March 3 while closing his shop, coerced into a car by four armed men after a shot was fired in the air.

Following the abduction, the kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of two million meticais (approximately $31,000), but shortly after the demand, the victim was killed. His body was subsequently discovered in a shallow grave in Chivongoene, Guijá. Investigations revealed that three of the kidnappers were apprehended at their residences, leading authorities to both the location of the captivity and the burial site.

The identity of the victim remains undisclosed, while forensic teams are analyzing the body to establish the cause of death. In total, seven suspects were detained, including the two police officers, alongside various individuals from business and transport sectors. Mucambe attributes their involvement to “measureless ambition.”

The arrested individuals, aged 32 to 45, have all denied participating in the crime, with one stating, “I sell flip-flops in the Chokwe market. I don’t know anything about the crimes they accuse me of.” Another suggested he was detained due to possession of a phone linked to a crime. Attempts to interview one of the police officers were unsuccessful as he declined to respond.

The police have confiscated firearms, forged documents, and two vehicles implicated in the kidnapping from the suspects.

The Mozambican police’s swift action has led to the arrest of seven suspects in the kidnapping and murder of an Indian businessman, emphasizing the involvement of police officers in serious criminal activities. The investigation continues as authorities aim to clarify details surrounding the ransom demand and the motives behind the suspects’ actions. With forensic analysis underway, all arrested individuals deny their involvement, raising questions about the integrity of law enforcement in the region.
