On March 19, 2025, Richard Jakpa led a raid with twenty armed men on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home in Accra. The security team disabled CCTV, searched for cash vaults, and left with equipment, finding no cash. This unprecedented raid on a former Bank of Ghana Governor raises concerns about security operations in the country.

On March 19, 2025, Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, led a raid on the home of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Approximately twenty armed men, some wearing balaclavas and equipped with AK-47 rifles, executed the raid in the morning while Dr. Addison was present at his residence in Roman Ridge, Accra.

During the raid, the armed team first disabled the CCTV system installed at Dr. Addison’s home before requesting he show them any cash vaults. Shocked, Dr. Addison informed them that he possessed no such vaults, which did not prevent the officers from allegedly ransacking the property. Eyewitness accounts indicated that no significant cash or vaults were discovered.

Following the unproductive search, the raiders confiscated the CCTV monitor and control unit. Dr. Addison and his family’s emotional distress was reported by an associate, emphasizing the traumatic impact of the incident. A former senior central bank official remarked on the unprecedented nature of the raid, stating, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”

This incident marks the second raid led by Jakpa on high-profile former appointees of the previous administration since President John Mahama took office on January 7, 2025. The first raid involved Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, the longest-serving Finance Minister in Ghana, whose residence in Labone was raided by a group of armed men on February 10, 2025. The event was recorded by CCTV and shared publicly, raising significant concerns regarding security and government authority.

The raid led by Richard Jakpa on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home highlights alarming trends in governmental security operations in Ghana. The incident underscores the trauma inflicted on former public officials and raises questions about the accountability of security forces. Such actions may set a troubling precedent regarding the treatment of former officials, as demonstrated by a similar raid on Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s home earlier this year.
