As traditional fitness avenues like gyms became inaccessible, running emerged as a straightforward alternative requiring minimal equipment.

Running activities have expanded significantly, with organized groups such as the Windhoek Runners Club becoming focal points for enthusiasts. Many individuals now commit to early morning runs, often starting at approximately 5:30 AM, with popular routes including 5km, 10km, and challenging 21km paths along Daan Viljoen.

Frans Amakali, an accomplished runner and Comrades Marathon ambassador, emphasizes the profound impact running has on well-being. Similarly, Lisa Matombola from the Windhoek City Runners highlights the benefits of running in boosting confidence and facilitating networking opportunities. “Running has different benefits – it has contributed to my confidence… Many runners are professionals, and running provides an easier way to connect with mentors, business partners, coaches, or people you wouldn’t typically meet on a daily basis,” she explains. Matombola also mentions the importance of running in teaching life skills such as patience and emotional intelligence.

Corporate and community initiatives are also driving the rise in running participation. Companies are increasingly organizing running events as team-building activities, with some covering participation costs for events such as those in Cape Town. Matombola participates in marathons to raise awareness for important causes, exemplifying how running can be leveraged for social impact.

Martin Angombe, a strength and conditioning coach, elaborates on the fitness advantages of running across various sports. He explains that running enhances endurance, speed, agility, and mental toughness. “Whether you’re a footballer, basketball player, or casual runner, incorporating running into your training routine can significantly improve overall athletic performance,” he notes, particularly highlighting improvements in cardiovascular endurance and mental resilience.

Looking ahead, the running season in Namibia is packed with events, including the SPAR Women’s Challenge on March 29 and the Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon on April 12.
