Lassa fever outbreaks in Nigeria have produced high mortality rates and a surge in cases since 2015. The viral disease is primarily contracted from rodents. Addressing awareness, hygiene, and healthcare interventions is critical for managing the ongoing crisis and preventing future incidences.

Lassa fever is a significant health concern in Nigeria, with 100 fatalities reported in the first quarter of 2025. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 2,728 suspected cases and 535 confirmed cases across 13 states, with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Taraba being among the most affected. The disease’s fatality rate currently sits at 18.7%, which includes the death of a healthcare worker.

Lassa fever continues to pose a considerable health threat in Nigeria, necessitating enhanced awareness, improved sanitation practices, and access to medical care. Key recommendations include declaring a health emergency, engaging communities, and improving food storage solutions. Proactive measures from health agencies and individual citizens alike are essential to mitigate ongoing transmission and outbreaks.
