UNM members reported that a criminal case against Varshalomidze had been initiated in Russia, making his detention linked to a request from Moscow. Gia Baramidze, a party member, asserted that the accusations against Varshalomidze were fabricated, emphasizing his non-involvement in military actions despite his contributions to Ukraine.
Russian media previously indicated Varshalomidze’s name appeared in a search warrant targeting 100 Georgian citizens for alleged mercenary activities. Supporters, including Tina Bokuchava, highlighted Varshalomidze’s commitment to both Georgia and Ukraine as the root of his persecution by Russia.
UNM’s Levan Antadze noted that Varshalomidze secured legal representation and efforts were underway by both the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ukrainian officials to liaise with Kazakh authorities. Varshalomidze is also known for his role in Georgian politics, having contested and lost in UNM leadership elections in 2020 amid protests against the results of the 2021 local elections.
