Brigadier General Jerry Baird Jr., a native of McDowell County, is stationed at the Pentagon and has served in the military for nearly 38 years. His new assignment is as director of operations (Forward) for U.S. Central Command in Saudi Arabia, following a nine-month deployment in Poland as deputy commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division. Baird will spend 12 months in Saudi Arabia, continuing his extensive commitment to military service, often separated from family.

Baird emphasizes his dedication, stating, “No military officer should ever pin on the star of a general to say no. When our nation’s leaders ask us to go, we go.” He also reflects on his responsibilities as a leader, noting, “My soldiers do not have the luxury to quit when it gets hard, and the Army is hard. So as a leader, how can I quit when things get a little uncomfortable for me?”

Baird acknowledged the vital role of his wife, Leslie, in his career. He shared that her encouragement motivates him, saying, “You still have more in the tank, we can do this.” He also lightly remarked, “If not for her support and prayers, I’d definitely be knee deep in a creek, sore lipping fish all day.”

Despite limited time at home to address damage from Hurricane Helene, Baird remains focused on his mission, indicating, “Central Command has an amazing mission, important for the stability of our country.” He detailed the extensive area overseen by U.S. CENTCOM, encompassing over 4 million square miles and populated by more than 560 million people across diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

The mission aims to enhance regional security and stability partnering with 21 nations, which includes countries such as Israel, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. Baird highlighted the importance of maintaining regional stability, stating, “With advances in technology, our moats have never been smaller… The importance of regional stability has never been more important in foreign lands.”

He expressed a personal hope that his sons, both Army officers, will not need to serve in such conflict-ridden areas, reiterating his willingness to undertake this duty for their safety. Baird humorously noted the climate differences he anticipates, saying, “From what I remember, my last time in the desert it was much warmer than it was in Poland, so I am packing accordingly.” He will oversee service members from all branches, including the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force.

Brigadier General Jerry Baird Jr.’s military career spans nearly four decades, reflecting his commitment to service. His upcoming assignment in Saudi Arabia highlights the essential role of U.S. Central Command in ensuring regional stability amidst complex geopolitical challenges. Baird’s dedication to his soldiers, family, and country underscores the sacrifices military personnel make for national security.
