Stephen Acquah, a footballer, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with robbery and escaping from lawful custody. The alleged robbery occurred at approximately 4:30 AM in Sakumono, where Acquah is accused of robbing a salesperson, Christina Benyiwa Baidoo, of her handbag containing significant personal items and cash. Acquah has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including a potential additional charge of causing harm, which the Prosecution plans to amend.
The court, presided over by Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan, set Acquah’s bail at GH¢100,000 with two sureties, requiring justification through property. The case has been adjourned until March 27, 2025. According to the Prosecution, on January 21, 2025, after Baidoo left for Cape Coast for an appointment, she encountered Acquah at Vivian Farms around 5:00 AM, where he allegedly demanded her belongings.
When Baidoo refused to comply, a struggle ensued between her and Acquah, during which Acquah reportedly used a knife to inflict wounds on her hand. This led her to eventually surrender her handbag. Following the robbery, Acquah fled the scene, but Baidoo was able to raise an alarm that resulted in his arrest by local police. Baidoo was subsequently treated for her injuries at Sakumono Hospital and referred to Tema General Hospital for further care, including surgeries for her wounds, which were reported as significant.
Despite being in handcuffs, Acquah attempted to escape while being escorted to the Police Charge Office; however, he was quickly recaptured by the patrol team. The Prosecution noted that Acquah admitted to the crime in his caution statement. This case highlights serious implications regarding public safety and the legal consequences of robbery and related offenses.
