National Security Conducts Unprecedented Raid on Former BoG Governor’s Home

A raid led by armed National Security personnel occurred at Dr. Ernest Addison’s home on March 19, 2025. The heavily armed team searched for alleged cash vaults but found nothing. The operation has drawn criticism as unprecedented and traumatizing for the former central bank governor and his family, raising concerns about the conduct of security forces during such raids.
On March 19, 2025, a significant security incident unfolded when armed men, numbering approximately 20, conducted a raid on the home of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The operation was led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, and took place at Dr. Addison’s residence located in Roman Ridge, Accra.
During the early morning raid, perpetrators, some of whom were masked and heavily armed with AK-47 rifles, disabled the home’s CCTV system. They demanded Dr. Addison accompany them to search for alleged “vaults” containing cash, to which he responded that no such vaults existed at his home.
Despite no discoveries of vaults or significant cash amounts, eyewitnesses reported that security personnel proceeded to ransack Dr. Addison’s home. After confirming the absence of the sought-after items, they removed the CCTV monitor and control unit from the premises.
The aftermath of the raid left Dr. Addison and his family traumatized, according to a close friend of the family. A retired senior official from the central bank remarked, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the incident.
This raid marked at least the second time Richard Jakpa has led operations against prominent figures from the previous Akufo-Addo administration since the inauguration of President John Mahama on January 7, 2025. Notably, on February 10, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, experienced a similar raid at his property in Labone, Accra, which was also captured on CCTV and later made public.
The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence represents a significant and alarming event in Ghana’s political landscape, marking the first instance of such an action against a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Despite the absence of any incriminating evidence, the incident has raised serious concerns regarding the methods used by national security forces. The psychological impact on the Addison family underscores the raid’s unsettling implications for former government officials. Moreover, this action reflects ongoing tensions as the new administration targets prominent figures associated with the previous government.
