Police Arrest Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s Murder, Investigation Ongoing

The Ghana Police have arrested Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a suspect in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. The suspect had a close relationship with Suale and allegedly betrayed him before his murder. The police’s investigation, facing criticism for its slow progress, is still ongoing. The GJA has pressed for accountability and justice, emphasizing the safety concerns for journalists in Ghana.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect linked to the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye. Koranteng, a close friend of Suale, allegedly compromised him by sharing his photos with a politician before the murder. Previously employed at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, the betrayal has shocked many, given their professional collaboration on investigative projects.
Ahmed Suale was murdered on January 16, 2019, near his home in Madina following his joint investigation with the BBC exposing corruption in African football. The FBI’s involvement has yielded crucial evidence, including phone communications between Koranteng and Suale shortly before the journalist’s death. Although the arrest has brought some relief to Suale’s family and colleagues, the investigation remains active, highlighting concerns regarding the police’s previous handling of the case.
Earlier this year, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) issued a two-month ultimatum to the police to advance the investigation or face escalating actions, including intervention from international bodies such as the ECOWAS Court of Justice. During a press conference, GJA President Albert Dwumfour expressed frustration over the lack of progress, stating that six years have passed since Suale’s murder without any arrest made.
Disturbing revelations emerged when former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame indicated that his office had not received a prosecution-ready docket even five years after Suale’s assassination. Additionally, Member of Parliament Kwame Asare-Obeng, known as A-Plus, claimed to have provided information to the police about the suspected killers.
This complex situation raises significant concerns about the police’s commitment to resolving Suale’s case and has prompted the GJA to advocate for accountability. The arrest of the suspected killer is a pivotal moment in a case that highlights the issue of journalists’ safety in Ghana, as many watch closely for developments in the investigation.
The arrest of Daniel Owusu Koranteng marks a critical point in the investigation of Ahmed Suale’s murder. The incident has prompted scrutiny of the police’s efforts and sparked advocacy from the Ghana Journalists Association for accountability and justice. With ongoing investigations and international attention, the case emphasizes the broader concerns regarding the safety of journalists in Ghana and reflects the urgency for effective law enforcement responses.
