President Ruto launched the Safari Rally Kenya, where Ott Tänak took an early lead after a strong showing in the initial stages. Despite challenges faced by some competitors, including technical issues, the rally is anticipated to continue with significant stages ahead as teams aim to recover points throughout the event.

President Ruto inaugurated the Safari Rally Kenya, signaling the start of the exciting tournament with a flag-off ceremony in the Kenyan capital. Following this, participants proceeded to the Kasarani Stadium for a super special stage, where thousands of fans gathered to witness the action. The rally then transitioned to the brand-new Mzabibu test located just 10 kilometers from the central rally base in Naivasha.

Elfyn Evans, the championship leader, initially set a strong pace during the Kasarani stage. However, Ott Tänak made a significant recovery in SS2, executing a commanding performance on the more technical stage, ultimately moving from fourth to first place by the end of the day. He concluded the day with a lead of 2.4 seconds over Takamoto Katsuta, with M-Sport Ford Puma driver Grégoire Munster following closely behind.

Commenting on the race’s challenges, Tänak stated, “For me, it was all fine. I think the first stage tomorrow will show quite a lot. It’s super tricky, very demanding and long at the same time. I think the whole day will be quite a big show.” Katsuta, who has a history of podium finishes in Kenya, faced setbacks due to a mistake that caused him to lose time in SS2.

The top five positions were rounded out by Evans and Kalle Rovanperä of the Toyota team. However, Adrien Fourmaux from Hyundai faced significant challenges, failing to make it to SS2 due to engine troubles. His teammate, defending champion Thierry Neuville, also struggled with a technical issue, faltering on his i20 N Rally1 and finishing eighth.

The rally action is set to continue on Friday, featuring six stages with the 31.40km Camp Moran test as a key highlight for both morning and afternoon loops. Though Fourmaux had to retire for the day, he plans to return on Friday to gather as many points as feasible.

Despite his recent struggles, Fourmaux expressed his commitment by stating, “It’s the type of rally where we can still score some points, even after retiring on the first day.” He detailed his technical difficulties, mentioning an electrical malfunction that rendered his battery useless, leading to challenges in starting the vehicle during regroup.

The Safari Rally Kenya commenced successfully under the leadership of President Ruto, showcasing an exciting start with Ott Tänak leading after a strong performance. While some competitors faced early setbacks due to technical issues, the rally promises intense competition as it progresses, with opportunities for teams to regain standing despite early challenges.
