Two chiefs in Kenya’s Rift Valley were murdered within 48 hours, intensifying concerns over security in the area. The incidents are linked to ongoing banditry, resulting in several deaths and prompting government action to combat violence and illegal firearms.

In the Rift Valley region of Kenya, two chiefs were murdered in separate incidents within 48 hours, highlighting escalating security concerns. The first victim, Victor Sebei, an assistant chief from Tiaty East, was shot during a standoff between security forces and bandits in Chepilat while the police were pursuing thieves who had stolen livestock from Ng’aratuko village. Police Commander Julius Kiragu noted that it remains unclear how Sebei was present at the scene.

The recent killings of Victor Sebei and Parara Lekiyierie reflect the increasing violence due to banditry in the Rift Valley, particularly concerning livestock theft and inter-community conflicts. Local authorities are taking urgent measures to address insecurity, including a 24-hour ultimatum for surrendering illegal firearms. The community’s call for effective government action emphasizes the urgent need for restoration of peace.
