Successful Rescue Operation of Missing Hikers in the Philippines

Four foreign hikers were rescued in the central Philippines after going missing during a trek. They were found near Silab hydropower plant, having survived under challenging conditions. In a remarkable rescue operation, four foreign hikers missing in the mountainous terrain of Negros Oriental, Philippines, were located on Saturday, following the earlier rescue of their two companions. The group, which included nationals from Germany, Britain, Russia, and Canada, embarked on a four-hour hike but became lost due to heavy rain and fog. Rescuers discovered them near the Silab hydropower plant, as confirmed by local authorities.

The identified hikers include German nationals Aldwin Fink, 60, and Wolfgang Schlenker, 67; Russian Anton Chernov, 38; and Canadian Terry De Gunten, 50. Philippine Army personnel located the hikers amidst dense vegetation, approximately 10 kilometers from where the first two hikers, Torsten Martin Groschupp and Alexander Radvanyi, were found the previous day.

According to rescue official Jose Lawrence Silorio, the hikers survived by consuming edible plants during their ordeal. Minor injuries were reported, with one individual receiving a blanket for warmth but ultimately able to stand on his own. The group faced challenging conditions, including poor visibility, due to the rain, which likely contributed to their disorientation while navigating the trail without a guide.

Police emphasized that severe weather conditions played a significant role in the hikers’ ordeal, noting that a lack of cell phone reception also obstructed their ability to call for help. They hypothesized that the hikers may have sought shelter when the rain intensified, exacerbating the situation.

Rescue teams highlighted the critical nature of having experienced guidance in such rugged terrains to prevent similar incidents, especially under adverse weather circumstances.
