On March 23, 2025, Venezuelan families protested against U.S. deportations to El Salvador, claiming their relatives were misled into believing they were being returned to Venezuela. Over 200 Venezuelans were sent to a Salvadoran prison and labor camp on March 16 after President Trump used wartime powers to expel individuals linked to gang activity. This has sparked outrage among families in Venezuela, who feel deceived about the nature of the flights.
The deported individuals were labeled members of the Tren de Aragua gang or illegal immigrants by the Trump administration. However, many relatives assert that their loved ones were innocently coerced into surrendering without proper legal proceedings. One protestor, Gladys Coromoto Rojas, questioned, “How come so many people said they were coming to Venezuela and today they are in El Salvador? They were deceived.”
Families recounted their experiences, including 36-year-old Maikel Rojas Olivera, who had communicated plans to return to Venezuela only to find himself in El Salvador after being detained by U.S. immigration authorities. His sister voiced demands for the return of the “innocent boys” held in the Salvadoran facility. The protest included approximately 80 participants, showcasing community support for the affected families.
In response to the situation, the Venezuelan government condemned the deportations as kidnappings and stated intentions to hire legal representation to facilitate the transfer of the detainees back to Venezuela.
The protests underscore the distress among Venezuelan families regarding the U.S. deportation actions, which many perceive as deceptive and unjust.
