Nigeria Advances Citizenship by Investment Initiative with New Legislation
The Nigerian House of Representatives advanced the Citizenship by Investment Bill, aimed at granting citizenship to foreign investors. The Nigerian House of Representatives recently progressed a notable Citizenship by Investment Bill, which passed its second reading. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and colleagues, the bill aims to grant citizenship to foreign investors who meet certain financial criteria or invest in vital sectors critical for Nigeria’s development. This initiative is designed to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to enhance economic growth and improve Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
House Leader Julius Ihonvbere also introduced the Indigene Status Bill, which intends to provide indigene status to individuals born in a state or those who have lived there for at least ten years. Additionally, the bill allows women married to men from other states to obtain indigene status if they have resided in the state for a minimum of five years.
Lawmakers are further evaluating Nigeria’s death penalty law, seeking to amend the Constitution to align capital punishment penalties with international standards. The amendments aim to guarantee fairness and proportionality while safeguarding human rights within the criminal justice system, focusing on maintaining public safety for all citizens.
The introduction of the Citizenship by Investment Bill demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to attracting foreign direct investment to spur economic growth.
