Kenyan TikToker Rish Kamunge has been charged for running a fake job scheme targeting Kenyans seeking employment in Mauritius. She collected significant sums from her victims, leading to their financial loss and distress when promised jobs did not materialize. Rish has been released on bond after court arraignment, while investigations continue into the scam.

Kenyan TikToker Wangare Kamunge, known as Rish Kamunge, has been released on a Ksh5 million personal bond after being arraigned for allegedly running a fraudulent job scheme aimed at Kenyans looking for employment in Mauritius. The court denied the prosecution’s request for a seven-day detention, leading to her release.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that Rish, the director of Trustpine Travel Agency, collected payments between Ksh200,000 and Ksh400,000 from victims expecting to secure jobs that did not exist. Victims expressed frustration, stating they were misled into believing they would find opportunities abroad.

Notably, some victims traveled to Mauritius and were left stranded at the airport, leading to their deportation back to Kenya. The DCI revealed that Rish admitted to receiving Ksh12.9 million from 43 victims. Following her court appearance, she was remanded at Capital Hill Police Station.

Detectives are encouraging other potential victims to report their cases at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. On March 27, angry Kenyans protested at Rish’s agency in Nairobi, demanding refunds for the money they paid for non-existent job placements.

Victims discovered the agency through online advertisements and shared their experiences of financial loss. One victim, Faith Nasimiyu, detailed her payments, stating she initially paid Ksh80,000 down, followed by Ksh145,000 for flight tickets, totaling Ksh225,000.

Rish Kamunge’s case highlights the serious issue of fraudulent job schemes targeting job seekers in Kenya. The DCI continues to investigate the situation, urging those affected to come forward. The incident underscores the importance of verifying job offers thoroughly before making any financial commitments, particularly when advertised online.
