North Korea has introduced what it claims as its first AI-powered suicide drone and its inaugural airborne early-warning radar system, according to reports from state media on March 27. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released imagery of the new technologies and stated that leader Kim Jong Un oversaw their inspection, emphasizing their importance for military modernization.
Kim Jong Un highlighted, “The field of unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence should be top-prioritized and developed in modernizing the armed forces.” The new radar systems are designed to detect enemy aircraft, ships, and missiles, bolstering both defensive and offensive operations. The AI drones are intended to autonomously identify targets while loitering in an operational area.
KCNA shared photographs of the drone in action, including images depicting the drone impacting a tank-like object and subsequently detonating. This marks the first official introduction of an airborne early warning aircraft by North Korea, a significant step in improving its aging air defense capabilities.
A September 2024 report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) noted North Korea’s efforts in transforming Russian-manufactured aircraft into radar platforms. These enhancements aim to supplement ground-based radar, which struggles due to the region’s rugged geography.
North Korea is increasingly recognized as a military ally of Russia, reportedly supplying weapons and military personnel in return for oil and advanced military technologies. Estimates suggest that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to assist Russia, with reports of their engagement against Ukrainian forces emerging from Kursk Oblast, where around 12,000 North Korean troops have been deployed since the previous autumn to aid in counteroffensive operations against Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that North Korean forces collaborating with Russia have faced significant casualties, estimating 4,000 losses, mostly from deaths in combat.
