Russia has witnessed a substantial rise in butter imports from Argentina (5.6 times) and Uruguay (100% increase) in early 2025. Dairy imports are primarily from Belarus and Kazakhstan. Onion and garlic imports increased 2.1 times, with significant tomato supplies from Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

Russia has experienced a notable increase in butter imports from Argentina and Uruguay, as highlighted by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor). In the early months of 2025, imports from Argentina surged 5.6 times compared to the previous year, totaling 2,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, imports from Uruguay also doubled, reaching 1,000 tonnes.

In the dairy sector, Belarus is the sole supplier of ice cream and cottage cheese to Russia, with ice cream imports amounting to 2.1 thousand tonnes and cottage cheese supplies hitting 16.6 thousand tonnes since 2025 began. Kazakhstan has also contributed with 1.4 thousand tonnes of ice cream.

Vegetable imports have seen similar increases, particularly onions and garlic, which rose 2.1 times to 77.8 thousand tonnes this year. Tomato imports are led by Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, supplying 30 thousand tonnes and 28.7 thousand tonnes respectively. In total, approximately 124.9 thousand tonnes of tomatoes have been imported into Russia since the year’s start.

The data from Rosselkhoznadzor reveals significant growth in Russia’s imports of butter, ice cream, and vegetables, showcasing enhanced trade relationships with Argentina and Uruguay. This trend indicates a strategic diversification of food sources, particularly in the dairy and vegetable sectors, contributing to overall food supply stability in Russia for 2025.
