According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.7, which was followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. While casualties were reported in both Thailand and Myanmar, the exact toll remains unclear. The Thai Prime Minister declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, while Myanmar did likewise for its capital and second-largest city.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as people rushed into the streets following the aggressive tremors. Multiple reports stated that water had splashed out of swimming pools due to the severity of the quake. The high-rise building, a 30-story government office project, collapsed as a direct result of the seismic activity, with police confirming the incident.

First responders have recovered at least two deceased individuals, while seven additional workers have been rescued. The total number of individuals trapped remains uncertain. Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief, reported hearing cries for assistance at the site, estimating hundreds of injuries.

Bangkok’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, noted that the tremors resulted in damage to numerous high-rise structures, with ongoing inspections to assess the impact. He advised residents to exercise caution. In response to the quake, some metro and light rail services were temporarily suspended for safety measures.
