Russia and North Korea are constructing a £77 million bridge, set for completion in 2026, to connect northern North Korea with eastern Russia. The project involves a new car bridge next to an existing rail bridge and is overseen by a Sochi-based firm. Preparatory work is ongoing, despite actual construction not yet starting.

A new bridge costing £77 million is being constructed to connect northern North Korea with eastern Russia. This 2.92-mile bridge will be located near Vladivostok and built over the Tumen River, which separates Russia, North Korea, and China. Expected to finish by the end of 2026, the bridge will complement the existing rail connection established by the “Friendship Bridge,” built in 1959.

The project was authorized by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who signed a decree for a Sochi-based firm, TonnelYuzhStroi, to oversee the construction. Although construction has not yet commenced, preparations are underway, including finalizing design documents and assembling construction teams, as stated by Alexander Matsegora, Russia’s ambassador to North Korea.

Matsegora confirmed that although initial preparations are ongoing, actual construction has yet to start. He emphasized the positive stance of Pyongyang regarding the recent discussions between Washington and Moscow about the Ukraine conflict, a situation in which North Korean soldiers are involved.

The ambassador revealed that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was informed about US-Russia communications by Sergey Shoygu, the Russian Security Council Secretary, during his recent visit to Pyongyang. Matsegora assured that there is no concern from North Korea regarding these interactions affecting their strong ties with Russia, which have historical significance due to shared conflicts.

The upcoming £77 million bridge between North Korea and Russia, spanning 2.92 miles, symbolizes a strengthening connection between the two nations. While preparations are underway, actual construction is anticipated to start following thorough planning. North Korea’s optimistic reaction to US-Russia discussions underlines the commitment to their strategic partnership, bolstered by historical ties.
