Lagos Police Arrest Trafficking Syndicate for Exploiting Girls to Mauritania

The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has arrested a trafficking syndicate for allegedly sending girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for prostitution. Two suspects were detained, revealing the recruitment of young girls, including one suspect’s own daughter, for sexual exploitation. Investigations are ongoing, with charges pending.
Police operatives at the Zone 2 Command in Onikan, Lagos, have apprehended a trafficking syndicate accused of transporting girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for sexual exploitation. This operation was confirmed by CSP Umma Ayuba, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, who stated that the arrests occurred on March 22.
The Zonal Intelligence Response Squad (ZIRS), led by SP Francis Kpoughul, targeted the syndicate’s base, resulting in the capture of two suspects. Both individuals reportedly confessed their involvement in the trafficking scheme, revealing details about their operations.
One suspect confessed to being connected to a woman in Mauritania who had previously faced prosecution for similar activities. This individual admitted to recruiting young girls, including her own 19-year-old daughter, for sexual exploitation, receiving ₦50,000 as a commission for each recruitment and over ₦500,000 in total.
The second suspect relayed that she was initially contracted to recruit girls as domestic workers but discovered their actual purpose as sex workers. After realizing the nature of the business, she withdrew her involvement and did not send any additional girls.
Investigations into the syndicate’s activities are ongoing, with plans to charge the suspects in court once the investigation is complete.
The successful operation by the Zone 2 Police Command highlights the ongoing issue of human trafficking in Nigeria. The involvement of parents in such activities raises serious concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The police are committed to continuing their investigation and holding the suspects accountable in court.
