Camrail Pursues Local Repair Certification for Knorr-Bremse Parts

Camrail seeks to obtain repair certifications from Knorr-Bremse to service parts locally in Douala. Pending certification, components are sent to South Africa for repairs. The refurbishment will enhance stock and reduce wait times, strengthening Camrail’s maintenance operations which include over 520 maintenance activities performed.
Camrail, which has operated the railways in Cameroon since 1999, is actively pursuing certification from Knorr-Bremse for the ability to repair their components locally. This certification, expected to be secured soon, will enable Camrail’s teams to service Knorr-Bremse parts at their Bassa workshops in Douala, reinforcing their role as a critical maintenance hub for railway operations.
While awaiting certification, its subsidiary, Africa Global Logistics (AGL), is complying with Knorr-Bremse’s requirement that repairs be conducted at the manufacturer’s facilities. On April 1, Camrail shipped 24 brake blocks to Knorr-Bremse’s South African branch for servicing, ensuring adherence to strict policies set by the manufacturer.
The refurbishment of these brake blocks is crucial, as it will bolster Camrail’s reserve stock and enhance equipment availability by minimizing wait times in accordance with a ‘just-in-time’ maintenance strategy. This operational approach is designed to ensure timely servicing and improves reliability across their railway network.
Camrail has reported conducting over 520 maintenance operations under its maintenance strategy, which encompasses comprehensive servicing for locomotives and railcars. This includes major overhauls, inspections, refurbishments, and safety checks to ensure optimal performance and safety of their transportation services.
Camrail is working to obtain repair certification from Knorr-Bremse to enhance its local service capabilities at the Bassa workshops. Pending approval, the company follows strict policies by shipping parts for servicing to the manufacturer’s facilities. Their proactive maintenance strategy has already seen over 520 operations, thus reinforcing their position as a vital railway maintenance hub in Cameroon.
