A Red alert has been declared in the Canary Islands due to Storm Nuria, with hurricane-force winds expected. Schools will close, and warnings are issued for tourists. The storm marks a shift from the islands’ typical weather, threatening heavy rains across Spain.

A Red alert has been issued by the Canary Islands government for Tenerife and La Palma due to Storm Nuria, with hurricane-force winds expected imminently. British tourists have been advised to avoid these areas from midnight until Thursday, April 3.

Winds reaching 68 to 81 miles per hour are anticipated, along with perilous sea conditions. The most extreme weather is forecasted for Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera, particularly in high-altitude zones such as La Palma’s summits and Teide National Park.

Other islands also face strong winds, with gusts between 43 to 62 miles per hour. Gran Canaria has been placed under an orange alert for its northern and mountainous regions starting Thursday.

To prepare for the storm, schools in Tenerife, La Palma, and La Graciosa will close on Thursday. The Canary Islands typically have temperate weather, making them a favored destination for British tourists.

Spain’s Met Office (AEMET) emphasized the intensity of Storm Nuria, predicting wind gusts exceeding 130 km/h between 5am and 5pm on the same day. Tourists are urged to secure their property by closing doors and windows.

As the fourteenth high-impact storm this season, Nuria’s impact extends beyond the Canary Islands, threatening rain and strong winds across various regions of Spain, including Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and the Cantabrian mountain range.

Authorities have also issued yellow warnings for Cádiz, Huelva, and Seville. The storm’s arrival will disrupt the dry and warm weather previously experienced across Spain.

Recently, the Canary Islands faced severe flooding, particularly in Gran Canaria, where torrential rain led to rapid flash floods, sweeping away vehicles and causing considerable property damage. Images from the event depicted significant destruction and rescue efforts in flooded areas.

The Canary Islands face severe weather conditions as Storm Nuria brings hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall, prompting a Red alert for Tenerife and La Palma. Schools will close, and tourists are advised to secure their properties. This storm marks a significant shift from the previously warm weather in Spain, and emergency warnings have been issued across several provinces. Recent flooding experiences exacerbate the urgency for safety measures in the islands.
