Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses in Addis Ababa for Sustainable Mobility

Addis Ababa has launched 100 electric buses to enhance public transport and promote electric mobility. Assembled locally and equipped with advanced technologies, these zero-emission vehicles will improve commuting experiences along a new transport route. Plans for increasing electric vehicle numbers in Ethiopia are part of a broader initiative to transition away from fuel-powered transport.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has introduced 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, aiming to promote electric mobility. Assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, these buses are equipped with advanced Intelligent Transportation System and Fare Collection System technologies.
The new fleet offers a comfortable commuting experience for residents along a new Bus Rapid Transit route, enhancing the public transport network. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, emphasized their environmental benefits with zero emissions and high passenger capacity.
Utilizing dedicated bus lanes, the electric buses are expected to improve travel times for commuters and alleviate the public transportation shortages in Addis Ababa, providing a more sustainable commuting option. The government reports over 100,000 electric vehicles currently in the country, with plans to increase this number to 500,000 in the next decade by replacing 95% of fuel-powered vehicles.
To further encourage electric mobility, the Ethiopian government banned gasoline and diesel vehicle imports last year, coinciding with rising global fuel prices.
The implementation of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant step towards enhancing public transportation and promoting electric mobility in Ethiopia. With advanced technology and plans for an extensive electric vehicle infrastructure, the city aims to tackle public transport challenges while promoting environmental sustainability.
