Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses to Enhance Public Transport in Addis Ababa

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility. Locally assembled but using Chinese components, these buses are equipped with advanced technologies and aim to provide efficient and eco-friendly transportation. The initiative supports Ethiopia’s goal of increasing its electric vehicle fleet significantly while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, aiming to enhance electric mobility. These buses, assembled locally by the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, incorporate parts sourced from China and feature advanced Intelligent Transportation and Fare Collection System technologies.
The new electric buses are now operational, providing efficient transport along the city’s Bus Rapid Transit routes. Ethiopian officials state that the buses are eco-friendly, producing zero emissions and offering spacious accommodations for passengers, thus significantly improving the public transport system.
Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, emphasized that these buses will utilize special bus lanes for quicker travel and help ease the city’s public transportation challenges. The initiative is expected to offer a more sustainable and comfortable commuting alternative for residents.
Further, the Ethiopian government has reported over 100,000 electric vehicles in operation nationwide, with a target to expand this figure to 500,000 in ten years, aiming to phase out 95% of gasoline and diesel vehicles. To expedite this transition, a ban on the importation of fossil-fuel vehicles was implemented last year in response to rising fuel prices.
The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa represents a significant step towards enhancing public transportation and promoting electric mobility in Ethiopia. The initiatives aim to reduce emissions and improve commuting experiences for residents. The government’s broader goals include substantially increasing the number of electric vehicles nationwide as part of its strategy to transition away from fossil fuels.
