Bigboy Nampungo received a 30-year prison sentence for his role in an armed robbery that targeted Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws, which resulted in theft of USD 74,000 in cash and valuables. Nampungo pleaded guilty to multiple charges, while several accomplices await trial denying involvement.
In Marondera, an armed robber named Bigboy Nampungo has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to six counts of armed robbery involving a theft of USD 74,000 in cash and valuables from businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws. Although sentenced to 60 years, he will serve an effective term of 30 years since part of his sentence is set to run concurrently.
Nampungo, aged 27 and from Chitungwiza, admitted involvement in the robbery that occurred at Alpha and Omega Farm on March 18, 2025. He and co-conspirators used firearms and blunt objects to overpower security personnel, specifically targeting guards Zex Mutasha Rusike, Petros Mabhunu, Medic Zhakata, and others during the incident.
The court was informed that Nampungo’s gang was armed with firearms, machetes, and iron bars while executing their plan. They assaulted the guards, bound them with cable ties, and extracted information, including the location of safes housing valuables.
Upon entering the farmhouse, they demanded cash and valuables, leading to the robbery of significant amounts, including USD 55,000 from a safe. The situation escalated when a guard named Elphas Maruta intervened—armed and firing shots—forcing the assailants to flee with the stolen items. The total value of stolen goods was calculated to be USD 74,000, with several accomplices still awaiting trial.
The other accused individuals, including Garikai Shangwa and Tawanda Mushayatu, have been remanded until April 10 as they deny any involvement in the crimes.
Bigboy Nampungo’s conviction serves as a significant development in the ongoing case of armed robbery against Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws. His effective 30-year sentence underscores the serious nature of these crimes. The ongoing trials for his accomplices highlight the judicial system’s response to organized crime and the importance of addressing such serious offenses in society.
