A Nigerian woman and her accomplice were arrested for trafficking young girls, including her daughter, to Mauritania for sex work for N50,000. They were apprehended in Lagos State, and the investigation revealed their syndicate lured victims under false pretenses. Both suspects confessed to their involvement, and they will be charged in court after the investigation concludes.
The Nigeria Police Force’s Zone 2 Command apprehended a woman and an accomplice for allegedly trafficking young girls, including the woman’s daughter, to Mauritania for sex work in exchange for N50,000. The arrests occurred on March 22 in the Meiran area of Lagos State, confirmed by Zonal Public Relations Officer Umma Ayuba.
The investigation revealed that the traffickers were part of a syndicate that worked with accomplices in Mauritania, luring victims with false promises. Following their arrest, both suspects admitted to their roles in the trafficking operations. The police operatives, led by SP Francis Kpoughul, stormed the suspects’ base, where they made the arrests.
Ayuba stated that the first suspect disclosed being introduced to a Mauritanian woman by another individual who is currently incarcerated for similar crimes. This suspect revealed she received N50,000 for each girl trafficked, including her 19-year-old daughter, whom she intended to send for sex work.
Additionally, the second suspect confessed she was recruited by the first to hire girls as domestic staff. However, after sending one girl to the first suspect and having her rejected, she grew suspicious. Further investigation revealed that the girls were being targeted for sex work, prompting her to withdraw from the operation. This realization occurred when she noted that the girl she sent had been rejected based on age and appearance.
As the investigation continues, Ayuba stated that both suspects will face charges in court shortly, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking in Nigeria.
This case highlights the serious issue of human trafficking in Nigeria, especially regarding the exploitation of young girls. The arrest of the suspects demonstrates law enforcement’s commitment to addressing and preventing such crimes. The suspects’ confessions reveal the methods traffickers use to lure victims, and the ongoing investigation aims to hold them accountable while protecting other potential victims.
