Comoros Ruling Party Secures Landslide Parliamentary Victory

In the recent parliamentary elections, the ruling CRC party, led by President Azali Assoumani, won 28 of 33 seats, ensuring its majority. Some opposition factions boycotted the election, citing past electoral fraud. Assoumani’s leadership, expanded by constitutional changes, strengthens his authority in Comoros amidst ongoing political challenges.
The ruling Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (CRC), led by President Azali Assoumani, triumphed by securing 28 out of 33 parliamentary seats, thereby maintaining its legislative majority in Comoros. The electoral commission announced the results, which are pending confirmation from the Supreme Court.
The parliamentary elections, conducted on Sunday, saw a boycott from several opposition parties that had accused the CRC of electoral malpractice in the past. President Assoumani, a former military figure, initially took control in 1999 via a coup but stepped down in 2006 after one term.
Assoumani resumed his political career in 2016, winning that year’s presidential elections and has remained in power since then. Amendments made in 2018 allowed him to evade term limits, changing the previous political system that rotated the presidency among the three islands of the nation. This recent election victory has further solidified his control amid the continuing political unrest.
The ruling CRC’s decisive electoral win confirms its dominance in Comoros politics, despite opposition boycotts and allegations of fraud. President Assoumani, leveraging constitutional changes, continues to consolidate power, reinforcing an atmosphere of political tension in the country.
