Outgoing Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau acknowledged that his election loss stemmed from his and the village board’s decision to abstain from voting on a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. According to sources, approximately 2,500 voters of Middle Eastern descent participated in the April 1 election. Challenger Jim Dodge defeated Pekau with a vote count of 8,938 to 6,710, reflecting a difference of 2,228 votes, although absentee ballots have yet to be certified by Cook and Will County clerks.

Pekau stated, “It’s clear I lost because I refused to call for a ceasefire in the Middle East,” during a village board meeting on April 7. He elaborated on the situation, indicating that issues surrounding a long-standing conflict were carried into local politics. The February 5 village board meeting had seen significant unrest after Pekau and the board declined to support a ceasefire resolution, provoking vocal opposition from pro-Palestinian attendees.

During a tense board meeting, Pekau faced hostility while trying to articulate his position. Past comments he made, such as suggesting others could support foreign nations, were misinterpreted and contributed to worsening tensions. As the current board approaches its final meeting on April 21, Pekau noted that he would recommend the positive achievements of his administration in the past eight years.

Despite acknowledging the challenges, Pekau remained critical of Dodge’s campaign. He asserted that claims of restoring civility were misleading, stating, “What it really means is that now that they are in charge, they will stop destroying the town and those running it.”
