Nepal Donates Relief to Quake-Affected Myanmar

On April 10, the government of Nepal donated 27 tons of relief materials to assist those affected by the recent earthquake in Myanmar. The relief supplies were handed over to Myanmar officials at Yangon International Airport, with significant contributions including food items, daily essentials, medicines, and health supplies. Nepal’s Joint Secretary of Foreign Ministry, Tapas Adhikari, confirmed the donation was part of a larger effort to support the victims of the quake.

The handover ceremony was attended by Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar, Harish Chandra Ghimire, alongside various Myanmar officials. During this event, a brief discussion took place between the representatives of both countries, focusing on the situation at hand. Joint Secretary Adhikari expressed condolences to those affected and paid tribute to victims of the earthquake, highlighting Myanmar’s past assistance to Nepal during the 2015 earthquake.

Joint Secretary Adhikari emphasized the cooperative efforts between Nepal and Myanmar, stating that this relief effort aims to enhance bilateral relations. He reiterated that both the government and private sectors in Nepal united to provide necessary relief during this crisis, pledging continued support for Myanmar’s recovery efforts.

Myanmar official Heu Wai Lwin acknowledged Nepal’s assistance and reported that over 3,590 individuals had died due to the quake, with 4,800 injured and 148 still missing. Nepali Ambassador Ghimire noted that around 150,000 Nepalis are working in Myanmar, with 18 reported casualties from the earthquake, while 15 remain missing.

The earthquake, which struck on March 28 with a magnitude of 7.7, caused widespread devastation. An organization representing Nepalis in Myanmar has been providing shelter to approximately 250 Nepalis impacted by the disaster. Additionally, a medical team from the Nepali Army has been offering emergency services, having treated over 1,300 affected individuals in the region.
