BYD has launched the Sealion 07 electric SUV, renamed Sealion 7 in Guatemala, continuing their expansion in international markets. The model went on sale on May 22, 2024, competing with Tesla’s Model Y. This launch aims to promote NEVs in Guatemala, and BYD reports strong sales growth both domestically and overseas.

BYD, the prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has officially launched its Sealion 07 electric SUV, which is known as Sealion 7 in Guatemala. This renaming reflects a consistent branding strategy the company has employed in other international markets. The announcement came on May 22, underlining BYD’s commitment to expanding its global reach since entering the Guatemalan market in November 2024, where they initially introduced four vehicle models.

The Sealion 07 not only joins BYD’s lineup but also aims to promote the uptake of new energy vehicles (NEVs) among consumers in Guatemala. BYD commented that the new model is set to encourage buyers toward more eco-friendly transportation options. Notably, the vehicle stands as a competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, with a starting price of RMB 189,800, which translates to about $26,360 in the Chinese market.

This EV is part of BYD’s broader push to utilize their advanced e-Platform 3.0 Evo, which was launched in China earlier this month. The platform is expected to bring improved performance and efficiency to BYD’s electric vehicles. The Sealion 07 itself has already made its way into a number of international markets, including Norway, Thailand, India, Mexico, and Hungary, indicating strong global interest.

Guatemala, which is conveniently located south of Mexico and features Guatemala City as its capital, represents a growing opportunity for BYD. Their partnership with Grupo Confiño enabled the introduction of models like the Han, Tang, Song Plus DM-i, and Seal last year. Currently, they also offer several other models such as the Dolphin, Seagull, Yuan Plus, and Song Pro DM-i, further expanding their appeal.

As the largest NEV manufacturer in China, BYD has reported impressive sales in the early months of 2024, with a total of 1,380,893 NEVs sold between January and April. This figure marks a remarkable year-on-year growth of nearly 47%. Notably, their international sales have been even more pronounced, with overseas sales hitting 285,170 units during the same period, reflecting a staggering increase of over 105%. This success underscores the growing global demand for electric vehicles and BYD’s strategic positioning to capitalize on it.

The launch of BYD’s Sealion 07, or Sealion 7 in Guatemala, marks another step in the company’s quest to expand its electric vehicle footprint. With its competitive pricing and environmental focus, this SUV is positioned to attract consumers in Central America amidst an increasingly electrified vehicle market. BYD continues to experience robust sales, both domestically and internationally, indicating strong demand for their NEVs. Expectations are that models like the Sealion 7 will further boost BYD’s presence in the region and beyond.
