Judge Sentences Three in River Gee, Two Escape During Jailbreak

Three men were sentenced to prison by the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court in River Gee County for various offenses, but two escaped from jail shortly after the sentences were handed down. A search is underway for the escapees, and an investigation into the jailbreak is in progress.
The Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court in River Gee County has sentenced three men for various crimes, but a serious security issue has arisen due to a recent jailbreak involving two of those convicted. The sentencing, which took place this week, was presided over by Judge D. Onesimus Banwon, who announced the penalties after the defendants pleaded guilty.
Nelson Jolo received a hefty 15-year sentence for armed robbery after he was found guilty of robbing Madam Mercy Seabo in Fish Town back in February 2025. Alongside him, Peter Weah from Sarbo, Welekken, and Samuel Toe from Fish Town were also prosecuted under Liberia’s New Drug Law for their roles in the unlicensed possession and sale of controlled drugs. Weah was sentenced to 10 years, while Toe faced a longer term of 17 years.
Only two days following their sentencing, a jailbreak occurred at the Fish Town Central Prison. Authorities confirmed that three inmates—two of which are the recently convicted—managed to escape during the night of Tuesday, May 27. Inmates Nelson Jolo and Samuel Toe were named in the escape, along with Anthony Davis, also known as Taree, who was serving a one-year sentence for an undisclosed offense.
Judge Banwon addressed concerns regarding the jailbreak, stating a joint security operation has been initiated to track down and recapture the escapees. He emphasized that an internal investigation is also underway to assess how the incident unfolded and investigate any potential lapses in the prison’s security protocols.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed how the inmates managed to escape nor if any prison staff played a role in facilitating their flight. The situation continues to unfold, and prison officials are under pressure to address these alarming security breaches and restore public confidence.
In summary, three men have been sentenced by the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court for armed robbery and drug-related offenses. However, a major security breach occurred shortly after their sentencing, with two of the convicted individuals escaping from Fish Town Central Prison. Authorities have launched a search to apprehend the escapees and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak. The situation indicates serious concerns about prison security and procedures.
