A long and detailed investigation has finally led to the arrest of a suspect linked to the horrifying uMlazi mass shooting that occurred back in August 2024. Melusi Dlamini, a 28-year-old man from Eswatini, has been taken into custody in connection to the deaths of six men during a violent incident at an informal settlement. Dlamini’s arrest on July 4, 2025, in Krugersdorp, a town in Gauteng, was announced by KwaZulu-Natal police, noting it was the result of hard work from the local murder and robbery unit; they’ve been relentless in pursuing leads throughout the year.

Details Emerge About the Fatal Attack

On the tragic night of August 17, 2024, six men were enjoying drinks with three women at their informal settlement hangout when two armed men showed up, initially pretending to look for cigarettes. After being told there were none, the men left but returned moments later, instructing the women to lie down while they brutally attacked the men. The chaos left six men dead, affirming the brutality of the crime. SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, stated that investigators have uncovered motivations for the incident, indicating it might have stemmed from past conflicts between local Xhosa-speaking men and Swati nationals.

Charges Filed As Police Hunt for Additional Suspect

Dlamini, who is facing serious charges — six counts of murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition — made a court appearance on July 7, 2025. Interestingly, he opted to abandon his bail application during this hearing. The case has been adjourned, with a new court date set for August 14, 2025, as police continue their search for a second suspect believed to be involved in this heinous crime. The South African Police Service is appealing for public assistance, urging anyone with information on the second suspect to come forward.

The arrest of Melusi Dlamini marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation of the uMlazi shooting that left six men dead. The authorities are still actively working to locate another accomplice involved in this tragic event. Community help is crucial, as police search for any leads that could aid in the case.
