On Thursday evening, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi youth, Kamrul Islam, was shot dead by two assailants in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Bangladesh, Kamrul had relocated to South Africa twelve years ago for better economic opportunities, later establishing his own business after working briefly.
According to Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, the fatal incident occurred when two individuals attempted to rob Kamrul while he was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. The robbers threatened him with a firearm and stole cash and valuables before taking him to his parked car, suspecting he had further money there.
In the ensuing conflict, one of the assailants shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death. Kamrul had recently built a new home in his village and intended to return to Bangladesh soon to get married. The family, already grieving the loss of their father, is devastated by the news, particularly affecting their mother, who has been fainting upon hearing of Kamrul’s demise.
The family has reached out to the Bangladesh embassy for assistance in repatriating Kamrul’s body. Additionally, the local administration of Daganbhuiyan upazila, represented by SM Azharul Islam, has expressed readiness to provide necessary help for the process of bringing Kamrul back home.
