The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be “near-average,” running from June 1 to November 30. Colorado State University’s forecast anticipates 12 named storms and five hurricanes. Philip Klotzbach, a CSU meteorologist, also noted that accumulated cyclone energy is expected to be 90% of normal, with tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures remaining near average.

The forecast indicates a neutral El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) for this year. In contrast, the previous year witnessed 18 named storms, including five major hurricanes, as reported by the National Hurricane Center. Notably, three named storms impacted Florida’s Gulf Coast in 2024: Debby, Helene, and Milton.

Historically, an average Atlantic hurricane season features 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, with three classified as major. Comparatively, the 2023 season recorded 20 named storms and seven hurricanes, ranking as the fourth highest since 1950 regarding named storms in a single year.

The storm names for the 2025 season, as designated by the National Hurricane Center, are: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.
