Experts like Christie Rowe of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory emphasize the unpredictability of such earthquakes, asserting that while they could happen at any moment, there remains potential for a delay of up to 300 years. “We want people to know that this could happen at any time,” Rowe stated.

The initial ground shaking will commence within the first 30 seconds of the earthquake, with locations up to 60 miles from the epicenter experiencing intense shaking rated at level 9. This degree of shaking is classified as violent and poses significant risks, including building collapses and structural failures, as indicated by the United States Geological Survey.

If the epicenter is near the Salton Sea, Los Angeles could experience level 2 to 3 shaking about 45 seconds after the rupture. High-intensity tremors could further escalate after 75 seconds, intensifying the shaking to level 9 at roughly 90 seconds post-event. Violent shaking may persist in Los Angeles for at least one minute, likely leading to extensive damage and casualties.

Rowe highlights the scale of potential destruction, noting that “the magnitude of damage is so great that it’s not trivial to prepare for it.” Addressing the consequences of this seismic event is crucial for minimizing loss of life and damage to infrastructure.
