Cyclone Jude has struck Northern Mozambique, causing significant damage and humanitarian concerns as the third storm in four months. Winds reached up to 195 km/h, displacing residents and increasing risks of waterborne diseases. UNICEF is providing emergency assistance to those affected.

Cyclone Jude has severely impacted Northern Mozambique, marking the third storm event in just four months. With landfall occurring in the morning, wind speeds reached 140 km/h (87 mph) and gusts soared to 195 km/h. The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) confirmed these figures, highlighting the cyclone’s strength.

The tropical storm made landfall in the Mossuril district of Nampula province, causing extensive flooding and infrastructural damage. Many residents are now homeless and without power. The intensity of the cyclone caught the locals in Nacala off guard, compounding an already unstable situation in the region.

Humanitarian response efforts are strained due to the aftermath of two previous cyclones that struck in December and January. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has assessed the conditions as “very bad,” emphasizing the increased vulnerability of children in this crisis.

Flooding has exacerbated the risk of waterborne diseases including cholera, diarrhoea, and malaria, especially concerning with Nampula having the highest child population in Mozambique. In response, UNICEF is collaborating with the government to distribute emergency aid kits and support to affected individuals.

Cyclone Jude has brought significant hardship to Northern Mozambique, compounding existing humanitarian challenges. The cyclone’s damaging winds and flooding have left many displaced, with particular concerns for children’s welfare, as highlighted by UNICEF. Ongoing aid efforts are crucial for addressing immediate needs and preventing disease outbreaks in the affected populations.
