Mozambique’s President Chapo Visits Cyclone-Hit Areas in Nampula

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo visited cyclone-affected areas, focusing on Nampula province hit by cyclone Jude. With 100,000 affected and 14 deaths, he emphasized the need for humanitarian protection and infrastructure repair, including damaged bridges and roads vital to recovery efforts.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo recently visited cyclone-affected areas to promote the protection of human life against extreme climatic events. His visit primarily took place at the Entente accommodation center in the Nampula province, where around 400 households displaced by cyclone Jude are currently sheltered. Approximately 100,000 individuals have been impacted, with 14 confirmed fatalities.
Chapo expressed his solidarity during the visit, highlighting that Nampula was hit hardest by cyclone Jude. He acknowledged the efforts of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) and local committees in minimizing casualties. In his exploration of the damage, he also assessed critical infrastructure—the roads and bridges damaged by the cyclone.
Particularly affected was a 200-meter bridge over the Monapo River in the Meconta district, crucial for the main north-south highway (EN1). A second significant bridge on EN1, crossing the Mecuburi River, also suffered damage. Chapo noted that contractors have been mobilized to facilitate necessary repairs and stressed the severity of the road damages encountered during his assessment.
President Chapo’s visit to cyclone-hit areas underscores the severe impact of tropical cyclones in Mozambique, particularly in Nampula province. His call for protection of human life and the swift mobilization of resources for repairs reflect a governmental commitment to addressing disaster response and recovery. Continued assessment and repair of critical infrastructure is essential for improving access to affected regions and ensuring safety amidst future climate challenges.
