Vandalism of Health Centre in Mozambique Highlights Security Issues

The Nametil health centre in Mozambique was vandalized by armed assailants, leading to significant damage and the death of a patient. This incident mirrors previous unrest following controversial elections, with additional attacks in the region, including a thwarted strike on the police command in Quinga. The Nametil health centre in Mogovolas district, Nampula province, Mozambique was vandalized by unknown assailants equipped with various weapons, including Molotov Cocktails. Key facilities within the center, such as the pharmacy, laboratories, storeroom, and pediatric ward, sustained significant damage. Tragically, some medications were set ablaze, and one patient undergoing treatment lost their life, prompting nurses to evacuate to a safer location.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence, as Nametil has previously experienced violence stemming from unrest following the controversial results of last October’s general elections. A prior mob attack led to the destruction of the Cholera Treatment Centre, established by the government alongside the NGO “Doctors Without Borders.”

In addition, an attempted assault on the police command in Quinga administrative post, located in the nearby Liupo district, was thwarted when law enforcement received a timely warning. Quinga had previously been beyond government control for two months when a supporter of former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane declared himself “Regulo” (chief), inciting a manhunt against government officials.

In response to the unrest, the district government’s riot police regained control of Quinga in January. Authorities are now focused on restoring order and providing better protection for essential services in these troubled regions.

The vandalism of the Nametil health centre highlights a troubling pattern of violence in Mozambique, particularly in the wake of disputed election results. The event not only resulted in loss of life but also further jeopardized healthcare access for the community.
