China Startup Launches AI Humanoid Robot for $27,500 with Mass Production Plans

A Chinese robotics startup has opened preorders for its AI-powered humanoid robot, priced at 199,000 yuan ($27,500), with plans for mass production by mid-year. The Dobot Atom, developed by Shenzhen-based firm Dobot, performs tasks like cooking breakfast, pouring milk, toasting bread, and carrying boxes, as showcased in a recent video release.
Standing at 153 cm tall and weighing 62 kg, the Dobot Atom is a significant advancement in robotics. Founded in 2015, Dobot has expanded globally, establishing offices in Japan, Germany, and the U.S. The preorder announcement was made on Tuesday.
Additionally, Midea Group, a major home appliance manufacturer from Guangdong, presented a prototype of its own humanoid robot capable of various tasks, including shaking hands and dancing, according to reports.
Industry expert Ma Jihua remarked to The Global Times that the debut of such robots indicates China is progressing towards mass production. He noted that the pricing of humanoid robots could soon align more closely with consumer electronics such as televisions.
Ma further emphasized that China has a vast market for robotic applications, especially in eldercare, educational assistance, and household chores. In a recent meeting, President Xi Jinping encouraged tech entrepreneurs to foster sustainable development within the private sector.
