Jorge Martin Hopes for MotoGP Return After Injury; Race Plans for Qatar
Jorge Martin aims for a return in Qatar after recovering from serious injuries sustained in pre-season crashes. Defending MotoGP champion Jorge Martin is optimistic about his return from injury, hoping to compete in the fourth round of the championship. After missing the first two rounds and confirming his absence in Austin, Texas, on March 29 and 30, he looks to participate in the Qatar race on April 12 and 13, contingent on his health. Martin stated, “I expect to be in Qatar, but only if it doesn’t pose any risks.”
Despite his eagerness, he emphasized the importance of not rushing the recovery process: “these are the timelines, and it would be a mistake to rush them,” which could lead to extended downtime. Martin sustained severe injuries in a pre-season crash, breaking his right hand and foot, as well as enduring a second crash while training on a supermoto bike.
His injuries include broken radius and scaphoid bones in his left wrist, four fractures in his left foot, and muscular injuries to his right ribs. Currently, he trails six-time champion Marc Marquez by 74 points after Marquez’s strong start to the season, winning both races and sprints.
Martin acknowledged Marquez’s performance, stating, “Marc winning is not something anyone could not have expected,” but remains positive about his recovery, saying, “It was a difficult time but now I start to see the light.” Meanwhile, the Yamaha-Pramac team announced that Miguel Oliveira would miss the Austin race due to injuries sustained in a previous crash, and will be replaced by Augusto Fernandez.
Oliveira suffered a sternoclavicular dislocation and ligament damage following the incident in Argentina. Fernandez, who previously raced for GasGas-Tech3, transitioned to a reserve rider for Yamaha this season after becoming the 2022 Moto2 World Champion.
