Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in West and Central Africa (July 2024)
Recent attacks by armed groups have caused severe casualties in Central African Republic and Burkina Faso, with significant displacement of civilians. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 150,000 people have fled violence in Lubero territory. Moreover, Mali has recorded a 127% surge in protection incidents this year, emphasizing the region’s escalating humanitarian crisis.
From 2 to 8 July 2024, significant unrest occurred in West and Central Africa, particularly affecting the Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali. Notable events included armed group assaults, resulting in numerous fatalities, mass displacements, and increasing humanitarian needs. These conflicts are indicative of the escalating security crises in the region, prompting urgent calls for humanitarian assistance and intervention.
The ongoing violence in West and Central Africa underscores a troubling trend of armed conflict primarily driven by non-state actors. In regions like the Central African Republic and Burkina Faso, clashes for control over resources have led to severe humanitarian crises.
