General Burhan returned to the presidential palace in Khartoum, marking a significant moment for the SAF as they claim control over key areas. The SAF’s offensive against the RSF has raised civilian casualties, particularly in Darfur. Tensions with Chad add complexity to the conflict, which has led to significant humanitarian crises in Sudan.

On Wednesday, General Abdel Fattah Burhan, the leader of Sudan’s army and de facto head of state, visited the presidential palace for the first time in nearly two years. His arrival is significant as it follows the Sudanese Armed Forces’ (SAF) reported recovery of control over key areas in Khartoum, including the airport, which had been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023.

Burhan’s statement broadcasted on Sudan state television proclaimed, “Khartoum is free; it’s done,” highlighting the SAF’s reclaiming of the capital as they launched a counter-offensive against the RSF. Reports indicate that the RSF is withdrawing from various neighborhoods in Khartoum amid these military advancements, suggesting a shift in power dynamics.

In tandem with the action in Khartoum, the SAF has been engaging the RSF in Darfur, marking an escalation of the conflict as they targeted areas where the RSF is purported to be strongest. Various local aid organizations have reported higher civilian casualties from attacks, including one shelling incident in a market that resulted in conflicting casualty figures of 54 to 126 civilian deaths.

The situation indicates a deepening of hostilities as the SAF appears determined to challenge the RSF’s territorial strongholds. This development raises concerns over the potential for increased violence and possible partitioning of the country along control lines, should the conflict escalate further. Moreover, tensions with neighboring Chad are surfacing due to allegations of support provided to the RSF, raising fears of broader regional conflict.

Yasser al-Atta, assistant commander of the SAF, has issued a warning directed at Chad’s president regarding potential retaliatory action, escalating the threat level. Such military posturing may be indicative of growing aggressiveness in the ongoing war that now has a staggering death toll estimated at 150,000, with millions displaced and facing dire humanitarian crises.

The recent developments in Sudan illustrate a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF. General Burhan’s reentry into the presidential palace symbolizes the SAF’s reclaiming of power in Khartoum, yet the severe humanitarian consequences and rising civilian casualties underscore the need for urgent international attention. Additionally, escalating tensions with Chad introduce a risk of regional instability, raising questions about the future of Sudanese governance and territorial integrity.
