American pastor Josh Sullivan was rescued in South Africa after being kidnapped during a prayer service. The high-stakes rescue operation led to the death of three suspects but resulted in Sullivan being found unharmed. His family and church have expressed gratitude for his safe return, while the police continue to investigate the case.

Josh Sullivan, a 35-year-old American pastor, was rescued in South Africa following his abduction at gunpoint last week. He was seized by armed men during a prayer service at his church, a branch of Fellowship Baptist Church located in Motherwell. Sullivan has been residing in South Africa with his family since 2018.

The rescue took place near a safe-house, approximately 14 miles from Motherwell, in Gqeberha. The South African Police Service, particularly the Hawks, which specializes in organized crime investigations, executed the operation after receiving reliable intelligence. This involved multiple police units working collaboratively.

During the operation, officers fired upon three suspects trying to escape in a vehicle, resulting in a high-intensity shootout that led to the deaths of the three unidentified assailants. Remarkably, Sullivan was found inside the vehicle unharmed and received medical evaluation, emerging in excellent condition.

His mother, Tonya Morton Rinker, expressed her gratitude on Facebook, stating, “A sad situation but I’m so thankful my son is home alive and safe. Thank you Lord!” She previously described Sullivan as an exceptional family man, emphasizing his kindness and strength.

The Fellowship Baptist Church, based in Tennessee, called for prayers for Sullivan during the incident. In the aftermath of his kidnapping, the church faced criticism and hostile messages regarding their missionary activities. Additionally, South African police announced they would continue investigating the abduction and encouraged the public to provide any relevant information.

The successful rescue of Josh Sullivan highlights the collaborative efforts of South African police forces in response to organized crime. His safe return has brought relief to his family and congregation, amidst concerns regarding missionary work in sensitive environments. The investigation into his abduction remains ongoing, signaling continued vigilance in ensuring safety and accountability.
