Egypt and Slovenia Oppose Displacing Gazans, Support Palestinian Statehood

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Slovenia’s Parliamentary Speaker Urska Klakocar Zupancic have jointly opposed the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. They are advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state as the sole pathway to long-term regional peace. This statement was made during talks in Cairo, where Sisi emphasized that the creation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is essential for achieving stability in the region.
Sisi highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitate the exchange of hostages, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate the crisis in the enclave. During the discussions, Zupancic expressed Slovenia’s strong rejection of Palestinian displacement and commended Egypt’s efforts in fostering regional security. She also reiterated Slovenia’s wish to deepen collaborations with Egypt on several international platforms.
Zupancic praised Egypt’s leadership in regional stability efforts, affirming Slovenia’s commitment to bolster consultation with Egypt on mutual interests. Slovenia has previously denounced US plans perceived to potentially displace Palestinians and criticized Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In response to these geopolitical challenges, Egypt presented a reconstruction plan for Gaza in March, aiming to safeguard the area from depopulation and the adverse effects of foreign plans. This multi-phase plan has garnered unanimous support from 22 Arab nations, showcasing a unified regional stance.
The dialogue also touched on enhancing the bilateral relationship between Egypt and Slovenia, with Sisi recognizing the recent progress in their diplomatic ties. He stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation in promoting economic and trade relations. Slovenia officially recognized the State of Palestine in June 2024, aligning with a European initiative aimed at pressuring Israel to contribute to ending the conflict in Gaza.
