Zelenskyy Meets Ramaphosa: A Push for Peace and Cooperation in South Africa

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy visited South Africa to discuss peace efforts, prisoner releases, and the return of abducted children with President Ramaphosa. The first visit of a Ukrainian president since diplomatic ties were established, the two leaders underlined collaboration opportunities and the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict with Russia.
In a significant diplomatic move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss crucial topics like establishing a just peace in their ongoing war, the release of prisoners, and the repatriation of Ukrainian children taken by Russia. This visit marks the first time a Ukrainian president has visited South Africa since the two nations established formal diplomatic relations.
During their meeting, Zelenskyy briefed Ramaphosa on the severe consequences following a Russian missile strike that occurred on Thursday night, resulting in more than 80 injuries and multiple fatalities. In light of this attack, Zelenskyy opted to shorten his South African visit, but Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha remains to continue diplomatic engagements.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards South Africa for its support of Ukraine and emphasized that finding a resolution to the war is vital. He stated, “We are grateful to you for your respect for Ukraine, for your support, and for sharing our belief that this war must be brought to an end as soon as possible.”
The discussions also focused on building international consensus and pressure on Russia, especially in the context of South Africa chairing the G20 this year. Ramaphosa affirmed South Africa’s commitment to pursuing a peaceful and comprehensive resolution to the conflict, stating that they are “willing and continue to support all efforts, including multilateral ones, to achieve a just, durable, and comprehensive peace.”
A notable point raised during the discussions was the urgent need to address the issue of abducted children; Zelenskyy provided a list of 400 Ukrainian children reportedly taken by Russian forces. The leaders also explored bilateral relations, with Zelenskyy highlighting areas of potential collaboration such as energy security, agriculture, and fertilizer production. He proposed a joint mineral hub to streamline fertilizer production and transportation.
Zelenskyy mentioned, “We can also work together to significantly increase electricity generation in your country – from nuclear to renewable sources. Affordable and cheap energy always helps economic growth. I’ve instructed our officials to thoroughly explore every potential joint project.”
Ramaphosa acknowledged Ukraine’s proactive approach in enhancing ties with African nations. He praised initiatives related to grain and food supply, including a proposal for establishing a grain hub in Mombasa, Kenya, noting the importance of cooperation between both countries.
Zelenskyy’s visit to South Africa marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts amid ongoing conflict. Discussions centered on achieving a peaceful resolution, addressing the plight of abducted children, and enhancing bilateral cooperation. The engagement underscores the importance of international solidarity in the face of aggression and the potential for future collaboration in various sectors between Ukraine and South Africa.
