Nigeria Police recover stolen vehicles in Ghana and Niger, thanks to international INTERPOL operations. Notable recoveries include a Toyota Prado and Toyota Hilux, with three suspects arrested in relation to the thefts. Authorities stress the need for vehicle registration and enhanced security measures among citizens.

The Nigeria Police Force announced the successful recovery of stolen vehicles, which had been illicitly transported to Ghana and Niger. This operation was part of a broader international effort coordinated with INTERPOL, aiming to tackle vehicle theft across borders. The police said in a statement released on Sunday that these operations involved collaboration between the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, along with their counterparts in Accra and Niamey.

Among the notable recoveries was a Toyota Prado (2020 model) that had been taken during a robbery in Abuja. After being traced to a location in Accra, Ghana, the vehicle was recovered with assistance from INTERPOL NCB Accra. The police noted, “Operatives of the INTERPOL NCB Abuja, working in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Accra, recovered a Toyota Prado (2020 model) in Accra, Ghana.”

This vehicle, which belonged to a Federal Government Agency in Nigeria, was stolen in a recent robbery incident. Alongside this recovery, the investigation led to the arrest of three suspects in Ghana who have since faced charges in an Accra court. Furthermore, the vehicle has been returned to Nigeria and was officially handed back to the specific agency involved.

In another related event, a Toyota Hilux (2018 model) was reported stolen from a staff member in the Utako District of Abuja on October 18, 2024. Thanks to investigations and international cooperation, this vehicle was found in Agadez, Niger Republic, and was officially returned at the Nigeria-Niger border.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, expressed gratitude for the teamwork that made these recoveries possible. “The commitment of the NPF under my leadership to improved global policing remains unwavering,” he stated, highlighting the importance of these joint efforts.

Additionally, the police revealed plans to recover two more vehicles—a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV—which were stolen in Abuja in May 2025 and believed to have been sold in Niger.

Acknowledging the invaluable support from INTERPOL NCB Accra, NCB Niamey, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, the NPF encouraged citizens to adopt tighter security measures. They urged Nigerians to register their vehicles on Police Electronic Platforms to boost the chances of recovery in the unfortunate event of theft.

The successful recovery of stolen vehicles by the Nigeria Police demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in tackling crime. With several vehicles now returned to their rightful owners, authorities continue to encourage citizens to take proactive measures for vehicle security. The police’s commitment to fighting vehicle theft is clear, with ongoing efforts to locate and return other stolen vehicles as well. Overall, every recovery emphasizes the integrity of cross-border law enforcement partnerships.
