Sudan Asks Uganda for Apology Over General Kainerugaba’s Comments

This week, the Democratic Republic of Congo also summoned Uganda’s temporary ambassador for clarification regarding Kainerugaba’s remarks, which were deemed inappropriate and alarming. Sudan criticized Kainerugaba’s threat of military aggression as serious, arguing that it undermines peace and security in the region. These tensions follow the 2019 ousting of long-time President Omar al-Bashir after popular protests, with Burhan temporarily leading a power-sharing council before the military retook control in 2021.

Kainerugaba has faced past criticism for inflammatory remarks, prompting Uganda’s leadership to issue apologies. In October 2022, President Yoweri Museveni apologized to Kenya following threats made by Kainerugaba, which raised regional tensions. Additionally, in July of the same year, Uganda’s government distanced itself from Kainerugaba’s supportive comments regarding armed groups in Ethiopia.
