Cyber Crime Costs Indonesia Over Rp33 Billion as Attacks Increase

Indonesia has faced severe cyber crime issues, leading to losses of Rp 33.29 billion due to 36.6 million attacks from 2012 to 2015. Arrests included 497 suspects, primarily foreigners. The police highlighted the increasing risk associated with smart car hacking, emphasizing the need for improved security.
As of August 2015, cyber crimes in Indonesia have resulted in significant financial losses, amounting to Rp 33.29 billion. According to Police Comm. Gen. Agung Setya, deputy director of special economic crime at the Indonesian Police Criminal Investigation Unit, there have been 36.6 million attacks on internet networks over the span of three years. He emphasized that these figures highlight the ongoing vulnerability of Indonesia to hacker assaults, as noted in the 2013 Data Security Threat report.
Between 2012 and April 2015, the Indonesian Police’s IT and Cyber Crime division successfully arrested 497 individuals linked to cyberspace-related crimes. Among those arrested, 389 were foreign nationals, while 108 were Indonesian citizens, reflecting the international scope of cyber crime. Setya noted that the rising number of internet users and faster internet connections in Indonesia are contributing to the increasing cybercrime rates.
Additionally, Setya pointed out a worrying trend in new types of cyber crimes, specifically the hacking of luxury vehicles. This issue has grown alongside the rise of smart cars equipped with internet connectivity features, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For instance, in London last year, 6,000 car thefts were reported, attributed to hacking keyless entry systems, underscoring the necessity for increased security measures against such threats.
In conclusion, cyber crime has emerged as a significant challenge for Indonesia, with substantial financial implications and a growing number of incidents. The arrests of both domestic and foreign offenders illustrate the international nature of this issue. As the trend of cyber attacks evolves, particularly regarding vehicle security, proactive measures will be essential to protect against these sophisticated threats.
