Ukrainian President Zelenskyy visited the UAE amid rising momentum for peace talks to end the conflict with Russia. This marks his first trip to the UAE since the war began, following his participation in the Munich Security Conference. Zelenskyy aims to focus on humanitarian efforts, economic partnerships, and the release of captives. His visit aligns with the International Defense Exhibition, highlighting ongoing arms discussions involving both nations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as discussions for potential peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia gain traction. This visit follows suggestions by U.S. President Donald Trump about meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia. The UAE’s history as a neutral ground for discussions, marked by its significant expatriate communities, makes it a viable option for hosting peace talks.
Zelenskyy arrived in Abu Dhabi after participating in the Munich Security Conference in Germany, accompanied by his wife, Olena Zelenska. Their reception at the airport included an Emirati official and an honor guard. This is Zelenskyy’s inaugural visit to the UAE since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022.
During his visit, Zelenskyy’s priorities include facilitating the return of captives, economic partnership, and implementing large-scale humanitarian initiatives. However, the specifics of his agenda in the UAE remain unclear. The timing coincides with the International Defense Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi, a significant arms show where both Ukrainian and Russian delegations are participating despite ongoing sanctions against Russia.
Amid these tensions, the UAE’s real estate market continues to attract Russian investments, providing mobility for individuals fleeing conscription and enabling the Russian elite to maintain ties to the Emirates. Notably, the previous U.S. administration expressed concern about the influx of Russian funds into the UAE.
Zelenskyy’s visit comes shortly after a meeting between Denis Manturov, Russia’s first deputy prime minister, and UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Their discussions emphasized the strengthening relationship between the UAE and Russia, focusing on mutual interests to benefit their populations.

The visit of President Zelenskyy to the UAE is strategically significant as it underscores the growing momentum for peace talks in the ongoing conflict with Russia. His objectives during this trip include humanitarian initiatives and diplomatic discussions, coinciding with the presence of Russian officials in the Emirates. The UAE’s role as a neutral ground for negotiations, along with its economic ties to both Ukraine and Russia, makes it a critical player in this geopolitical scenario.
